Uganda’s national female youth Member of Parliament (MP), Phiona Nyamutoro, has announced efforts with the National Women’s Council geared towards mobilizing all female leaders across the country to ask for underwear factories from the government.
MP Nyamutoro disclosed this at a meeting where sanitary towels and knickers were donated to 800 teenage mothers in Kasese District, noting that the move would include women leaders across the country voicing their concerns on the importance of addressing challenges girls face with menstrual hygiene in the country.
“We want to push the government to fulfil its pledge of making sanitary pads accessible for the girl child, especially school going ones. It would be very good if the government invested in factories in different parts of the country so that sanitary pads and underwear are available” she said.
According to Nyamutoro, the increasing demands for action follow recent media reports revealing that teenage girls in Kasese District and other parts of Uganda have resorted to sex with men in exchange for money to buy sanitary pads and underwear while bearing the brunt of an unwanted pregnancy.
The National Treasurer for Uganda’s National Women’s Council, Norah Akwi, on her part, noted that given the organization’s experience in dealing with parenting, it has realized that menstrual hygiene remains a significant national challenge. She called on the government to create factories for underwear and sanitary pads in every sub-region.
