Mauritius’ Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, has restated the commitment of the government to continue the fight against all forms of violence including Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 5.

Koonjoo-Shah disclosed this at the opening of an Interfaith forum organized in collaboration with the Council of Religions where an information pack for faith-based organizations to end Gender-Based Violence in line with the National Strategy and Action Plan against GBV was launched.

According to her, since the launch of the National Strategy and Action Plan against GBV last year, a collaborative approach has been adopted by all Ministries, Departments and other stakeholders in the country to address the issue of GBV and work towards its elimination.

Koonjoo-Shah explained that GBV is an issue with international concern considering the impact it has on the lives of women and girls. She recalled that during the pandemic in 2020, an increase was registered in domestic violence cases in Mauritius and this affects families and societies as a whole.

Koonjoo-Shah emphasized the primary and fundamental role of the Council of Religions in curbing GBV through the inculcation of values to congregants by conveying messages of peace and unity to them. She noted that such an act can ultimately help to eliminate GBV in society.
