Having long dominated Olympic athletics, Kenya has marshalled its oenological talent to compete in the wine world’s equivalent.
The sommelier squad from east Africa will also be the first all-women line-up to take on the best of the best in next month’s World Blind Tasting Championships in the Champagne region of France.
A sense of intimidation would be understandable given the 30 other nations represented have rich cultures of wine-drinking and grape-growing that for some stretch back millennia.
However, all the Kenyans have internationally recognized sommelier qualifications and their coach, Victoria Mulu-Munywoki, makes a virtue of their rookie status, arguing the “wine virgins” who only tasted wine well into adulthood could be at an advantage.
