Your Child’s Playtime, a Luxury or a Necessity?

By Boma Benjy – Iwuoha

Have you ever wondered why most preschool and early school curriculums are often filled with various short breaks and playtimes? Experts find this to be very important in the development period of a child. I remember that growing up back home, we had several kinds of outdoor swing sets at our playground, and people often asked us if we were running a daycare in our home. We had our neighbours and kids from other homes coming over to our playground every chance they got. I never fully understood the reason for all of those swing sets or the interest it attracted from other kids.

Kids Zone: Effect of false promises on your Child

I must say many parents have good intentions when they make promises to their kids; almost every parent wants to keep their kids happy and as such, they do not intentionally break their promises, knowing that it would affect or disappoint the kid, but this is not an excuse. One of the golden rules of parenting is to do what you say and say only what you will do. While some parents are very faithful in keeping their promises, never making promises they cannot keep, some others (though with good intentions), are unable to keep some of their promises when the time comes to deliver.

Do Board Games Really Increase your Kid’s Brain Power?

As a kid, I remember playing board games with some of my aunts and beating them silly until no one wanted to play with me; and I don’t mean the kind, where they let you win, No; I mean the kind where they try really hard to beat you but never really do. I was that kid that preferred to sit in with her dad and play a game of scrabble or chess, instead of cycling around the estate with the other kids; Yes! I was that kind of kid. Did I mention I had a perfect score in my quantitative and verbal reasoning at my entrance exams for secondary education? Oh! I’m also really good and fast with calculations.

Your kid and her sweet tooth and the sugar diet plan

Parents often wonder why their kids tend to crave sugary snacks. The food industry does not make it any easier, as you find them daily devising new ways to tantalize children with their sweet snacks. Parents are often unable to escape the industry’s antics since they are found lurking almost everywhere you turn; the dentist’s office, the bank drive, the parks etc. flashing a lollipop or some other tantalizing sweets at the kids, frustrating parents to no end.
